Desert & Sea Eco-ranch

La Paz, Mexico

Our ranch is a unique place between desert and sea which combines ecotourism, permaculture and 100% renewable energies. Here we would like to create a "showroom" for sustainable living in the desert to show people the beauty and efficiency of living in harmony with nature in this unique environment.

Location
THE RANCH

Our stunning ranch is located just about 30 min. from the heart of La Paz, Baja California Sur and only a 20 min ride from the airport. It's built on a hill directly overlooking the beach with an amazing 180° view at the Sea of Cortez on the one side and an awesome 180° view to the "sea" of hundreds of desert cacti on the other side. We are surrounded by a unbelievably rich wildlife with whaleshark and dolphin observation zone directly in front of us and the impressive desert lanscape and fauna just behind us.

Fishermen and ranchos close by provide us with fresh fish, selfmade goat cheese and authentic mexican culture.

ABOUT US

We are Marjorie and Jean-Christophe, a french couple who has been living
in Baja California Sur since 2006. In 2014, we started our eco-project in a wild, pristine
environment between cactus desert and the blue sea. We have been managing a receptive travel agency and offer tours all around the peninsula to travellers who focus on eco friendly tourism. Right now we are constantly working on sustainable development on our ranch.

Permaculture

PERMACULTURE

in the desert

One of our biggest goals and challenges is to operate our ranch in an ecologic and sustainable way

humming bird
ORGANIC

We do not use any pesticide or chemical fertilizer for our plants. Our goal is to make our soil richer year after year by creating the natural conditions for our plants to grow. We add our compost to create humus and experiment different permaculture techniques such as "lasagna" and "hugelkultur" and have to adapt it to our harsh and arid environment to prevent evaporation and protect from the desert sun, heat and wind.

WATER SAVING

We do realise how precious our water is because we barely get one day of rain each year and we need to go 1km away at a well to get our water. this is why we try to get advantage of every drop, starting by using less water having a dry toilet system, or recycling all our grey water for our fruit trees using natural purifying techniques.

A thick layer of mulch is layed to protect our soil from evaporation. we use the sun to heat our showering water and natures´s gravity  is used for water pressure.

RESILIENCE

The intense contact we have here with nature naturally led us to think and live differently and this is why apart from saving water we also get all of our electricity with solar panels, we recycle plastic, aluminium, glass and organic materials. All our floors are made with recycled pallets. We have planted more than 150 native and drought resistant plants and created terraces to stabilize the sandy environment and promote biodiversity. We also do cleaning campaings on the beach and along roads nearby.
